QLED vs OLED: One Makes Its Own Light, One Doesn't
The names were built to be confused. QLED and OLED differ by one letter and get pitched to the same shopper. They are not two flavors of one technology. They are two different ways of making a picture, and the gap between them is the oldest divide in flat-panel television: one panel makes its own light, and the other has a light shining through it.
Get that single fact straight and most of the marketing sorts itself out. OLED is self-emissive. Every pixel is its own tiny light source that can glow, dim, or switch off entirely. QLED is not self-emissive at all. It is a liquid-crystal display with a backlight behind it, the same basic machine as any other LED TV, plus one clever film. Everything downstream, from black levels to burn-in to price, falls out of that one difference.
The one letter that changes everything
Break the acronyms open. The O in OLED stands for organic: organic compounds that emit light directly when current runs through them. No backlight, no shutter, no filter stack in between. The Q in QLED stands for quantum dot, and here the marketing takes a small liberty. A quantum dot is a nanocrystal that re-emits light in a very pure color, but it has to be hit by light first. In a QLED that light is an ordinary blue LED backlight. The dots convert part of that blue into clean red and green, which widens the color the set can show.
They do not replace the backlight.
They sit in front of it.
So a QLED is a backlit LCD with a better coat of paint on its color. That is not an insult; the quantum-dot layer genuinely helps. But it means a QLED inherits every strength and every limit of the LCD underneath it. Where QLED wins: brightness and color at full tilt
Point a QLED and an OLED at a sunlit living room and the QLED usually has the easier job. Because the backlight is a separate, dedicated light source, a good LCD can pour a lot of sustained brightness across the whole screen without straining. That buys two things: it fights glare in a bright room, and it drives HDR highlights (the glint on chrome, a shaft of sun through a window) hard enough that they read as genuinely bright rather than merely light grey.
It also helps color at the top end. Very saturated colors tend to drift toward white as brightness climbs, and the trait that tracks how well a screen keeps its color when it gets loud is color volume. Quantum dots plus a strong backlight give QLED an edge there, and Mini-LED sets (which pack the backlight with far more, far smaller LEDs) press that edge further. If your room has big windows and you watch a lot of bright, punchy material, the advantage is real and felt, not a spec-sheet curiosity.
Where OLED wins: black, angles, and uniformity
Now turn the lights off and play something dark. This is OLED's home ground. A pixel that makes its own light can also make none: switch it off and it is truly black, not dark grey. The result is per-pixel contrast no backlit panel can match, because an LCD has to block its backlight with liquid crystal, and that block is never total. Some light always leaks past.
QLED fights back with local dimming, carving the backlight into zones it can dim independently. It helps a great deal. But a zone is far larger than a pixel, so a small highlight against black lights its whole zone and spills a soft halo around itself: blooming. OLED has no zones and no halo, which is why it stays clean on subtitles, starfields, and dark menus. Two quieter wins go to OLED as well. Slide off to the side (the far end of the sofa, the kitchen doorway) and an LCD tends to shed contrast and color, while OLED holds its picture across a wide arc; the viewing-angles comparison covers why some panels collapse off-axis and others don't. And with no backlight to shine unevenly, OLED usually shows flatter uniformity on a full grey or a slow pan across a sports pitch, where cheaper LCDs can betray clouding or dark patches.
Burn-in: the honest risk, kept in proportion
OLED carries one weakness QLED simply does not: burn-in. Organic pixels age as they light, and if one region shows the same bright, static element for hundreds of hours (a broadcaster ident, a stock ticker, a fixed ammo counter) it can age faster than its surroundings and leave a faint permanent ghost. QLED, being a backlit LCD, is effectively immune; any image retention it shows is temporary and clears on its own.
Keep it in proportion, though. Sets now nudge pixels around, dim static logos, and run compensation cycles that even out wear. For ordinary mixed viewing (films, shows, sport, a bit of everything) burn-in is unlikely across a normal lifespan. The risk climbs only under a narrow habit: the same bright static graphic, many hours a day, for years on end. A news channel left running, or one game with a fixed heads-up display for a decade, is the shape of the danger; if that is not how you watch, it should not steer your choice.

Price, and the word doing the heavy lifting
OLED still tends to cost more at a given size, and for years that was the whole story. It is messier now. "QLED" is a marketing label stretched across an enormous range, from cheap edge-lit sets whose quantum-dot film is doing nearly all the work, with little or no local dimming, up to Mini-LED flagships that rival OLED on price and outrun it on brightness. Two televisions can wear the same QLED badge and be nothing alike. The label alone tells you very little; the number of dimming zones and the type of backlight tell you far more.

One last wrinkle muddies the neat either/or before you shop. QD-OLED panels lay a quantum-dot layer over a self-emissive OLED emitter: still self-emissive, still perfect blacks, but with a healthy share of QLED's brightness and color folded in. Where that reaches your budget, the old divide softens. For most shoppers it stays blunt and useful: a bright room full of glare and daytime sport leans QLED; a darker room and film nights lean OLED. How you actually watch, far more than any single number on the box, is what should pick the panel.
