Smart TV Platforms: The Half of Your Television That Watches Back
Reviews measure the panel: contrast, colour, motion, benchmarked to a decimal point. Then the set arrives and you spend years arguing with its software instead. The launcher that takes its time waking up, the app that quietly stopped updating, the sponsored tile where your input list used to be. That half gets a fraction of the scrutiny, and you touch it daily.
It is also the half that watches back.
Five platforms, and what actually separates them
Most sets run one of five systems, with regional exceptions and the occasional brand that switches sides between model years. The badge on the bezel tells you less than the software behind it.
- webOS (LG): Linux-based, inherited from Palm by way of HP, with a card launcher and the pointer-style Magic Remote. Quick on LG’s better hardware, less so down the range.
- Tizen (Samsung): also Linux-based, begun as a wider industry project, now effectively Samsung’s alone, with a launcher built around its free ad-supported channels. One firm owns the stack: consistent and closed in equal measure.
- Google TV: a recommendation-driven launcher on top of Android TV OS, used by Sony, TCL, Philips and others. Hisense splits its range between it and the company’s own Vidaa. Broad catalogue, Chromecast built in, a home screen organised around what Google wants to surface.
- Fire TV (Amazon): for years a fork of Android carrying Amazon’s store instead of Google’s, and more recently a Linux-based system of Amazon’s own on some newer hardware. It reaches other brands too, including much of Panasonic’s European range, and it has the pushiest home screen here.
- Roku: purpose-built and light, with no Android underneath. It runs well on cheap silicon, which is why budget sets use it, mostly in the United States. Roku is an ad business that also writes software.
Day to day the differences are duller than the marketing suggests. Catalogues have converged at the top, so gaps show at the edges: a regional broadcaster, a niche music service. Speed is mostly hardware. The same launcher that feels instant on a flagship crawls two rungs down the range.
The software ages before the glass does
Support lifetime is the specification nobody prints on the box. A panel keeps working long after the chip driving its interface has been abandoned, and the decay is gradual: a streaming service raises its minimum app version or tightens its copy-protection rules, and an ageing set sheds apps one at a time while the picture stays perfect. That gap between how long the hardware lasts and how long the software gets fed deserves weight while you are shortlisting sets.
Home screen advertising follows from the business model rather than from malice. Hardware margins are thin and the platform is where the money sits: store revenue share, paid placement, ad-supported channels selling their own inventory. When Walmart bought Vizio, the asset worth having was an ad platform attached to millions of installed screens.
ACR, or how the set knows what you are watching
Automatic content recognition is the machinery underneath that advertising, and it deserves a precise description, because the vague version (“the TV spies on you”) is alarming and useless at once.
The set samples what is on screen at intervals. Not a recording: a snapshot of pixels, or a slice of audio, reduced on the device into a compact fingerprint, a hash that stands in for the frame without being reconstructable back into it. That fingerprint goes to a matching service holding a library built from broadcast feeds, streaming catalogues, adverts and discs. On a match it knows the programme, usually the channel, often the advert break.
Sampling sits in the display pipeline, which is the detail that catches people out. It does not care where the picture came from. Console, disc player, cable box, a stick in the HDMI socket: whatever reaches the screen can be fingerprinted, so changing source is no opt-out.
What follows is ordinary ad tech. The viewing log is tied to a device identifier and the household IP address, then joined with the other devices on that address, which is how an advert you sat through becomes a banner on your phone. It also feeds measurement: which households saw a given spot. Manufacturers call this improving recommendations. Partly true. Mostly beside the point.
Microphones and the things said near them
Voice is the second channel, and hardware design tells you more than any policy document. Some sets put far-field microphones in the chassis, permanently powered, listening for a wake word. Others put the microphone in the remote, live only while you hold a button. The second is better for privacy and costs nothing.
Wake word detection runs on the device, so nothing leaves the house while the set waits to hear its name. Once triggered, the clip goes to a server, because the recognition models do not fit inside a television, and it is usually kept against your account. Several assistants have used human reviewers to grade a sample of those clips, with a separate opt-out. Chassis microphones normally have a mute, sometimes a physical switch under the panel: the only kind you can verify by eye.
Where the switches actually live
Most consent is collected during first-time setup, in the wall of agreements everyone taps through while impatient for a picture. Read it once, properly. The terms split into a service agreement you must accept and optional consents you can decline. Declining bricks nothing: it costs recommendations and sometimes the free channel guide.
On a running set the toggles hide under a privacy or terms submenu. Labels vary by brand and drift with firmware, but the ACR control usually mentions viewing information: Samsung has used “Viewing Information Services”, LG ships it as “Live Plus”, Roku files it under smart TV experience as a setting about TV inputs. Google and Amazon keep ad personalisation separate from usage and diagnostics reporting, so switching off personalised adverts leaves the collection running underneath. A factory reset, incidentally, drops you back into the wizard, which asks for all of it again.
Keeping the television off the network is the blunt instrument. It works, at the price of firmware and security fixes while the apps rot. Router-level blocking is the middle path, with one wrinkle: some devices ignore the router’s DNS server and query a hardcoded resolver instead. Blocking by destination at the firewall is more reliable and more work.
Where the set was sold changes the defaults. Under GDPR in the EU and the UK this counts as personal data, so consent must be freely given and asked for separately, and refusing cannot cost you the television’s core function. You can also demand a copy of what was gathered, or its deletion. The United States runs an opt-out model, led by California, which is why American menus carry a “Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information” line and European ones do not.
Buying the panel and ignoring the computer
An external streaming box is the usual answer, good for reasons unrelated to privacy. A dedicated streamer carries a faster processor than any TV maker could justify soldering into a set built to a shelf price, it gets updated for longer, and it is cheap to replace once it ages out, which makes it a tidy way to refresh an older set. Read its data policy too: a Fire Stick and a Roku stick are the same ad business in a smaller box.
One caveat wrecks the strategy if you miss it. ACR runs on the television, not on the source, so a clean box feeding a connected set with sampling switched on changes nothing. The box buys privacy only if the TV is offline or its collection is properly disabled.
Then put your effort where it returns something. Kill the motion smoothing, pick a sane preset, give the picture settings the hour they deserve. How the image looks in your room is decided by the panel and backlight technology underneath, and no software shifts that. Bad software can be routed around. A mediocre panel is permanent.
